Your Big Question

This is a very common question and in some ways it comes from a good place – the desire for everyone to be right. It certainly is a question asked by people who are seeking an answer to the issues and problems of life.

But behind this question is a particular assumption – that Christians are judgemental/stupid if they hold that there is only one path to God.  Much New Age thinking claims that all roads lead to God. They say that there can’t possible be only the one road. But do you see the flaw in this argument? They attempt to demolish an absolute (there is one path to God) with another absolute (there cannot be only one road to God). So we cannot claim an absolute truth, but oddly they can.

Is it true that there is no one road to God? Interestingly, all worldviews claim to have the truth. Atheism, Agnosticism, Islam, Judaism and the Eastern Religions all make particular truth claims – claims about why we are here, where we are heading and how we get there. These are often mutually exclusive. Can they all be right?

There are truths in all the worldviews – but they cannot all be the truth and we are faced with needing to make hard choices. We must and should treat all people with respect and never appear superior or arrogant. We believe all people are made in the image of God.

In brief, the issues tend to revolve around the person and purpose of Jesus. Jesus was certainly an incredible person whose influence was enormous. But he made some very specific truth claims. We cannot dilute these or just take some of them.

Jesus said he was the way, the truth and life. He never claimed to point to the way, he said he was the way. All worldviews make truth claims. Atheism sees us as the products of chance – here today, gone tomorrow. The Islamic God is unapproachable and weighs sin. Eastern religions believe that the universe is God.

The big question to answer is which worldview is truly liveable? I contend that the answer is Christianity. Chistianity paints life in bold colours, it explains why we are as we are and allows us to see beyond death.

Jesus bestrides history and his influence and example are still tremendously strong. We respect and reach out in love to all people. But we contend that Jesus is the way and that all paths cannot lead to same God.
